Imagine a beauty queen, once celebrated for her poise and grace, now facing a prison sentence for a string of hotel thefts. This is the reality for Tania Tan Yi Rong, a former Miss Singapore Mermaid, whose story is far more complex than a simple headline.
Tania, 34, found herself in court on Tuesday, January 13th, sentenced to eight months behind bars. Her crimes? Four counts of theft and one count of mischief, a stark contrast to the glamorous world she once inhabited. She was crowned Miss Singapore Mermaid in 2017 and even represented Singapore in international pageants, including being a finalist for Miss Singapore World in 2021.
But here's where the story takes a turn. Court documents reveal a pattern of hotel heists, each incident adding to a growing list of charges.
- Four Points by Sheraton Singapore (November 22, 2024): Tania made off with items valued at S$1,281.60, including curtains, a telephone, and a clock.
- Conrad Singapore Orchard (November 25, 2024): She pilfered goods worth S$1,395, such as an electric kettle, umbrellas, and artwork.
- Novotel hotel (December 25, 2024): The haul included cushions, bedsheets, a clock, a telephone, and a toothbrush holder, totaling S$280.
- The Robertson House (February 14, 2025): Tania stole a table lamp, mattress, telephone, and hangers, with a value of S$951.20.
This wasn't Tania's first encounter with the law. She had a history of stealing dating back to 2020, targeting golf clubs, hospitals, restaurants, and residential carparks. The items taken ranged from cutlery and towels to paper and helmets.
And this is the part most people miss... Despite being out on bail and undergoing court-ordered treatment, Tania continued her stealing spree. She accumulated nearly S$4,000 worth of stolen goods from hotels during this period. The court ultimately determined that she was no longer suitable for treatment-based sentencing due to this pattern of reoffending.
The prosecution cited a report from the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), indicating Tania's history of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and compulsive hoarding disorder. The report stated that these conditions had relapsed during the period of the offenses.
Tania claimed that taking the items provided relief from distressing thoughts and anxiety. However, the prosecution argued that this did not excuse her actions, particularly as she reoffended shortly after treatment began.
