Since its opening in July, the Summit Boulevard recycling site has been a hub of activity, but not in the way the city intended. Reeves reveals a startling statistic: 85-90% of items dumped at this site are non-recyclable. This means that instead of being recycled, these items end up in landfills, leading to frequent clean-up calls and significant costs.
The city has received 218 calls to clean up the site since July, with at least half of those being scheduled clean-ups. These clean-ups are labor-intensive, often requiring five people and several hours to complete. As a result, the Summit Boulevard location is estimated to cost taxpayers a staggering $260,000 annually.
Reeves explains that the relocation to the Transfer Station would bring several benefits. The Transfer Station would be manned by a single employee with minimal equipment, costing taxpayers just $30,000 annually. This is a significant reduction in operational costs compared to the current situation.
The mayor emphasizes that this move is not just about addressing illegal dumping but also about efficient resource management. By securing the new location, the city can control access, potentially offering extended hours, which is currently not possible at the Summit Boulevard site due to its unassisted nature.
