A Record-Breaking December Channel Crossing: 803 Migrants Reach UK in Small Boats
In a remarkable turn of events, over 800 people embarked on a perilous journey across the English Channel in small boats, setting a new record for December. This unprecedented feat occurred on a single day, with 803 individuals successfully reaching the UK shores from northern France. The latest official figures reveal a significant surge in Channel crossings, bringing the total for 2025 to an impressive 41,455, just shy of the record-breaking 45,774 set in 2022.
The day's events were particularly notable, as it marked the largest number of people crossing the Channel in a single day since October 8th, when 1,075 individuals made the journey. This surge in activity comes after a four-week lull, during which the Home Office recorded no crossings between November 15th and December 12th. December, typically a quieter month due to adverse weather, witnessed this unexpected spike, with 2,163 people arriving so far this month, inching closer to the record 3,254 set in December of the previous year.
The Border Force played a crucial role, with a vessel spotted bringing migrants into Dover after an incident in the Channel. This incident followed a busy night in France, where numerous boats were witnessed departing the shores. French police encountered resistance early Saturday morning near Calais, clashing with migrants attempting to launch a small boat. Video footage captured the tense moment when gendarmes fired tear gas into a crowd of approximately 30 migrants gathered on a riverbank in Grand-Fort-Philippe.
The Labour government has intensified efforts to address small boat arrivals through collaboration with European countries. France, under pressure from the UK, has agreed to intercept small boats in the Channel. A policy shift allows security forces to stop boats at sea but only before they pick up passengers. Additionally, Germany's recent law introduces severe penalties for people smugglers, with up to 10 years in prison for attempting to bring migrants to the UK.
