A Hero's Journey: From War to Oil Rig Disaster
Kevin Topham, a beloved RAF veteran and survivor of the Sea Gem oil rig disaster, has left us at the age of 97. His story is one of resilience, humor, and a deep passion for the fuel industry. Born in Derry, Ireland, to a mixed English-Maltese family, Kevin's life took him from the RAF's bomb disposal unit to the heart of the oil industry.
But here's where it gets controversial... Kevin's survival story from the Sea Gem disaster is both inspiring and tragic. In 1965, while working on the rig that discovered North Sea gas, the Sea Gem's legs collapsed, leading to a devastating loss of 15 lives. Kevin, however, jumped into the North Sea and spent a harrowing 45 minutes in the water before finding safety in a life raft. He was eventually rescued by an RAF helicopter, one of the 19 survivors of this catastrophic event.
Preserving Memories: The Dukes Wood Oil Museum
Kevin's expertise in the oil industry didn't end there. He founded the Dukes Wood Oil Museum in Eakring, later moving it to Kelham Hall, to honor the memory of those who perished on the Sea Gem. His dedication to keeping this history alive is a testament to his character.
And this is the part most people miss... Kevin's interviews on TV shows like Countryfile, Good Morning Britain, and The One Show showcased his knowledge and passion. He was a true ambassador for the industry, sharing his insights and experiences with a wider audience.
A Family Man and Community Icon
Kevin's personal life was just as remarkable. He met his wife, Molly, at the Corn Exchange (now Club X) in the 1940s, and they shared 66 years of marriage. Together, they raised a son, David (who sadly predeceased him), and a daughter, Karen. Kevin also had a close bond with his granddaughter, Gemma, and his son-in-law, Ian.
When Club X reopened in 2023, Kevin, accompanied by his carer, Donna Hardy, was the first through the doors, a touching tribute to his and Molly's dancing days.
His daughter, Karen, described him as "a very well-loved and respected member of the community, a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who lived life to the full." She added, "His lively sense of humor will be greatly missed by all who knew him."
Friends and family will gather to celebrate Kevin's life at the Sherwood Forest Crematorium on March 13th, followed by an internment at Edingley Church and a wake at Kelham Country House.
